FAQs

1. What is Broadband-enabling?

Broadband-enabling is the process of fitting a Broadband fibre optic cable into a building. This provides always-on, very high-speed communications of voice, data or video. However, when ordering Broadband, there are often very long lead times, high costs and complete unavailability in many locations. And, unlike plumbing, electricity and other services, most landlords in the UK do not provide Broadband.

In Metropolitan areas there are considerable fibre networks under the streets. This cabling has rarely been run into buildings, let alone up through the building. hSo link this fibre cabling up to offer Tier 1 Carriers, like BT and Cable & Wireless to Broadband enable buildings throughout London, the M4 Corridor and beyond.

2. Do my tenants have to use hSo’s services?

No – your tenants are free to use whichever service provider they chose. However, due to our high service levels and competitive pricing, we have had 100% take-up from occupiers in some buildings. Many tenants welcome the proactive approach from the landlord offering them something that they would otherwise be unable to afford. We give landlords a share of the annual revenue from each customer.

3. Who owns the cabling and equipment, and how long will it last?

We can own the fibre-optic cabling which has a lifespan of 20 years – longer than much of the plant and machinery in your building. And, as necessary, we will maintain and update the hardware on each end as technology changes. Or, landlords can own the cabling thereby benefiting from asset control, tax allowances and simpler documentation. No cabling need be added or removed other than in exceptional cases.

As tenants become customers, we install the necessary horizontal cabling and hardware to the tenant’s demise. We work with property landlords and their building managers to ensure wiring can be undertaken out of office hours to minimise disruption to tenants.

4. How long does it take to wire my building?

Typically, it takes 60-90 working days to procure fibre optic network connections to a town centre location. Business Parks and out of town locations may take longer and can be prohibitively expensive to connect to. In parallel, it can take 6-10 days to complete the installation of fibre through an office building depending on the size and number of risers. We often connect buildings via aerials, lasers and wireless transmitters on the rooftop
