Ask any IT director and they’ll tell you that a company’s structured cabling is a major headache. The International Facility Management Association reported that in 2002 property churn, (the number of office moves during a year as a percentage of total office positions occupied) was 41%. According to Boston based Forester Group, the yearly cost of churn for moving power, data and voice connections is £500 per person. As companies are often changing staff, this can mount up and become a significant cost.

WiFi helps to limit this. Fitting a building with wireless technology can save tenants up to £4 per ft2 pa. Landlords can also earn extra income by charging an increase in rent for this facility. Many companies are now using relocation as the opportunity to introduce WiFi networked offices. It enables a greater use of workspace and increased productivity.

WiFi enables hot-desking policies to be implemented. Staff can pick up and carry their laptops anywhere in the office. It reduces the dependency on fixed internal walls for cabling, and buildings can cost less, as a reduced under floor void is needed.
